Team trainer Nick Paparesta acknowledged the need for a possible surgery "down the road", although the team and Moreland are set to wait out the effects of the cortisone shot for the time being before any further course of action is determined.

Athletics' Mitch Moreland: Back with team Monday

Returned to the Athletics on Monday after being away for several days while getting alternate opinions on his wrist injury, the Associated Press reports. The veteran has been on the injured list since Aug. 31 and doesn't yet have a firm timetable for any kind of rehab work or a return to action. Moreland was slashing an underwhelming .227/.286/.415 over 81 games prior to going on the shelf, with his season deemed a disappointment after he was expected to provide a more consistent left-handed bat.

Do not expect to see Mitch Moreland again in 2021

Mitch Moreland had already begun to lose playing time in August. With Josh Harrison becoming the primary option at second, and Jed Lowrie getting more time as the Oakland A’s designated hitter, Moreland was relegated to more of a backup role. Tendonitis in his left wrist had led to a stint on the Injured List after his last appearance on August 26, the latest setback in a disappointing season.

Athletics' Mitch Moreland: Slated to miss more than 10 days

(wrist) will be on the injured list longer than the minimum of 10 days, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. Moreland landed on the 10-day IL on Tuesday, and manager Bob Melvin revealed Friday that the 35-year-old will be in a splint "for at least a few weeks," Shayna Rubin of The San Jose Mercury News reports. A better timetable for his return will likely be revealed once he sheds his splint, but Jed Lowrie should see the majority of the playing time as the designated hitter in Moreland's absence.

Athletics' Mitch Moreland: Goes on IL with wrist tendinitis

Was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with left wrist tendinitis, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Moreland hasn't played since going 0-for-3 with a walk and run scored in Thursday's loss to the Yankees, and him not appearing in the last three games seems likely to be due to the wrist issue. His move to the injured list is retroactive to Saturday, so he'll be eligible to be activated Sept. 7, though it's possible he'll require more time to recover. In his absence, Jed Lowrie becomes further cemented as the primary DH against right-handed starters, which should open up more playing time for Tony Kemp at the keystone.

Mitch Moreland pitches scoreless inning against White Sox

The Oakland A’s bullpen worked overtime Tuesday night, after starting pitcher Chris Bassitt was seriously injured and had to leave early. It was difficult to take the rest of the baseball game seriously after watching one of the players get carted away to the hospital, and there wasn’t much to see anyway as the Chicago White Sox cruised to a 9-0 victory. But that blowout margin did have one interesting result.

Athletics' Mitch Moreland: Fades into reserve role

Is out of the lineup for the third time in four games Wednesday versus the White Sox, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Moreland had a brief window of playing time reopen last week when Josh Harrison (quadriceps) and Elvis Andrus (personal) missed a few games, but both players have since recaptured everyday roles in the middle infield. Jed Lowrie will serve as the Athletics' designated hitter Wednesday and is likely to see most of the reps against right-handed pitching moving forward, leaving Moreland will no path to steady at-bats while Oakland is nearly at full strength.

Is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rangers. With Josh Harrison (quadriceps) missing time of late, playing time has opened back up for Moreland, who started in each of the last four games while going 6-for-17 with three home runs and a triple. The lefty-hitting Moreland will move back to the bench with a southpaw (Kolby Allard) on the bump for Texas. Moreland's opportunities versus right-handed pitching could soon take a hit, as Harrison ran the bases Sunday and could be ready to rejoin the lineup Monday versus the White Sox, according to Martin Gallegos of MLB.com.
