After two years playing at a prep school in North Carolina he has decided to conclude his senior season where it all started. His freshman year he was a cougar, and now he will close out his high school career as a Cougar.

Saturday’s Rewind: Combine Academy takes down Huntington Prep; Mikey Williams doesn’t play

Nationally ranked Combine Academy beat Huntington Prep in the featured game in the first day of the Charlotte Court XIV Classic at Northside Christian. The tournament brought together many regional and national powers for a two-day event at Northside Christian. One of the scheduled featured performers was Vertical Academy’s Mikey Williams. Williams didn’t play for Vertical Saturday. There was no official reason released.

Charlotte high school basketball star Mikey Williams plans to go to college for at least one year, according to both Williams and his father. Williams is a 17-year-old junior combo guard for Vertical Academy, a new basketball program in Charlotte created by his father, Mahlon Williams. A 5-star recruit, Williams is ranked No. 15 in 247Sports’ consensus rankings for the Class of 2023 and No. 1 in North Carolina.

National high school basketball phenom Mikey Williams and Vertical Academy will headline the first 1-of-1 Invitational, sponsored by Puma. 1-of-1 Academy is a new high school basketball program that was started by Charlotte Hornets point guard LaMelo Ball. The players on the team are mostly from Charlotte, though there are players on the boys team from Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee. The out-of-state players live in a team house near uptown Charlotte.

Most of the Vertical Academy players took the court ahead of their Friday night primetime game against Westtown School at the 2022 Hoophall Classic. Nearly every one of the 2,000 fans in attendance rose, phones out, ready to record the show. Mikey Williams waited in the depths of Blake Arena.

The new NCAA NIL (name, image, likeness) rule that went into effect on July 1 that allows college athletes to profit from their images and reputations, has now trickled down to star high school athletes. Seventeen-year-old high school prep phenom Mikey Williams has signed a multiyear footwear and apparel endorsement deal with Puma. The deal makes him the first American high school basketball player to sign a sneaker deal with a global footwear company.
