Watch R.E.M.’s Mike Mills Play “Losing My Religion” At Mercer University Commencement

It’s college graduation season, and at least a few prominent musicians seem to be racking up honorary doctorates these days. Two days ago, Dr. Taylor Swift got her degree from NYU and gave a commencement speech. Earlier this week, the former R.E.M. member Mike Mills accomplished something similar, and he sang a version of his old band’s biggest hit to the graduating class at Mercer University in the process.

Superchunk share “On the Floor” ft R.E.M.’s Mike Mills

Superchunk will release new album Wild Loneliness later this month, and it's very different from any album they've made before, as nearly every song features notable guest musicians and vocalists. The latest single is "On the Floor," which has backing vocals by R.E.M.'s Mike Mills and piano from Franklin Bruno. Mills' harmonies were such a distinctive part of R.E.M.'s sound, and he brings a little of that magic to this very catchy song. Frontman Mac McCaughan told Stereogum's Chris DeVille he got Bruno to play piano because the song reminded him of R.E.M.'s Reckoning, which then led him to reach out to Mills. Listen below.

Making of ‘C’mon C’mon’: How Fatherhood (and Wim Wenders) Inspired Director Mike Mills

Mike Mills was feeling depressed. Having completed his previous film, 20th Century Women, in 2016, he was searching for his next project, but the Los Angeles-based writer-director admits, “I was quite lost. I didn’t know what to do. It was a weird struggle.” The answer, though, proved to be right in front of him: “It started with being a dad, watching my kid, all the things being a parent showed me, what it did to my heart and my understanding of the world.” But though he was inspired by his child, Hopper, born to Mills and his wife, director Miranda July,...
