Leo Kottke & Mike Gordon History Lesson at Troy Music Hall

Leo Kottke and Mike Gordon brought their acoustic duo tour to Troy Savings Bank Music Hall on Wednesday, December 15. The venue has been a sought after performance destination by various artists since the early 20th century. The original padded wooden seats help absorb a layer of sound, allowing listeners in even the deepest seats to hear the same clear sound as the entire room. The acoustic instruments toted by the pair resonated just right into acoustic ear candy at the performance blocks from the Hudson River.

The Core: Mike Gordon

The Phish bassist opens up on rehearsing for his first tour with Leo Kottke in 16 years and figuring out how to find “the fabric of the band.”. Rehearsing for this tour with Leo [Kottke] has been really fun—we’re piecing together some material from all three of our albums, sort of dabbling. And then we are working on some stuff that’s not on any of our albums. What I really like about bands, and maybe even duos, is when they have a certain sound that transcends whatever song they’re playing—a groove and a tonality and a sensibility. I call it the fabric of the band. There’s a certain flow.

Mike Gordon And Steve Winwood Jam With The Dead On This Day In 2003 [Listen]

The Fare Thee Well shows brought together Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead a few summers ago. While three out of the Core Four have currently assembled as Dead & Company, a group staring down the barrel of another summer tour, the four former Grateful Dead members previously toured together over the years following Jerry Garcia‘s death. One such touring iteration featuring Weir, Lesh, Kreutzman, and Hart was The Dead, whose 2003 configuration also tapped Jimmy Herring, Rob Barraco, Jeff Chimenti, and Joan Osborne to round out the group’s stellar lineup. Following The Dead’s one-off February show at The Warfield in San Francisco that year, the ensemble launched a major tour that summer.
