Friends, family, players and many others gathered inside McKale Center to say goodbye to one of the all-time greats to ever coach the game of softball, Mike Candrea. The celebration started off with Vice President and Director of Athletics Dave Heeke speaking about how much Candrea meant to everyone at the University of Arizona.

Arizona’s Caitlin Lowe 12th active head coach groomed by Mike Candrea

Former Arizona All-American and U.S. Olympic outfielder Caitlin Lowe was officially introduced Wednesday as the successor to Mike Candrea as the Wildcats’ softball coach. Lowe, 36, spent the last nine seasons under Candrea following a professional career with the USSSA Pride. Lowe served as the program’s director of operations in 2013 and then as a volunteer assistant coach in 2014, before joining the coaching staff full-time in 2015. She served as Arizona’s associate head coach from 2018 to 2021.

After 36 years as Arizona's softball coach, Mike Candrea announced his retirement on Monday. "It has been an honor to represent the University of Arizona for 36 years," said Candrea. "I am indebted to every player, coach and member of my support staff that has made the Arizona softball experience one that I will cherish forever. When I arrived in 1985, I wanted to build a culture of excellence and compete consistently at the highest levels of Division 1 softball. Most of all, our goa was to prepare our student-athletes for life after softball and build relationships that would last a lifetime."
