Maya Hawke Knows Her Parents Helped Her Enter Hollywood, But 'If I Suck, I'll Get Kicked Out'

Despite growing up as the daughter of Oscar nominees Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman, Maya Hawke didn't always think she'd go into acting. "There was no moment," the 22-year-old tells PEOPLE in this week's issue. "I was always just doing school plays and acting camp over the summer. I guess it clicked for me that I wanted to do it professionally was when I realized that there were no school plays for adults. The happiest place in the world for me was on set or on stage."

Stranger Things 4 Star Maya Hawke Promises the Long Wait Is Worth It

Despite production on Season 4 of Stranger Things originally kicking off early in 2020, details about the new adventure have been kept tightly under wraps, and while fans are remaining as patient as possible, star Maya Hawke recently promised that the extended wait for the new season would all be worth it. While no one involved with the production could have anticipated having to shut down for months due to the coronavirus pandemic, those delays allowed creators Matt and Ross Duffer to more thoroughly develop the new season, setting the stage for the new episodes to be some of the best the series has to offer.

Maya Hawke was wearing a vintage Taylor Swift t-shirt when she called me on Zoom from her temporary home in Atlanta, Georgia, where she’s been filming season 4 of Stranger Things since September. “I’ve had this haircut for a lonnng time,” she said, scrunching her choppy chin-length hair. It’s just one of several major changes the hit Netflix series has brought on for Hawke—the other being how she’s joined her A-list parents, Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman, on the path to fame. (Especially after last season’s big reveal: Her character, Robin, is gay.)
