Twins move struggling Matt Shoemaker to bullpen

Matt Shoemaker knew he hadn’t been pitching well, of course, but as the days following a clunker in Kansas City went on, Shoemaker wasn’t really thinking anything out of the ordinary was going on. That start, though, helped spur conversations between Twins decisionmakers behind the scenes regarding a change. The...

Bailey Ober will start for Twins as Matt Shoemaker heads for the bullpen

Matt Shoemaker wanted to object, but he knew it wouldn't overturn the verdict. Twins manager Rocco Baldelli informed the pitcher Thursday he'd no longer be starting for the Twins, instead taking a place in the bullpen. This came after a disastrous start at Kansas City a week ago when he gave up nine runs and left the game in the first inning. Shoemaker said he had trouble drying off his sweaty hands, which contributed to his loss of control.

Newly-minted reliever Matt Shoemaker gives up two runs as Twins fall to Astros

Twins rookie Bailey Ober strode off the Target Field mound on Friday night after completing the top half of the fifth in line for a win, his team leading 3-1 at the time. Two innings later, Astros starter José Urquidy also finished his night in line for the win. His team had surged ahead in the top of the seventh, and he capped his final inning of work by striking out two of the last three batters he faced.

Matt Shoemaker removed from rotation, fits in with Twins bullpen

The Minnesota Twins decided to pull Matt Shoemaker from the starting rotation on Friday but he still made an impact in Friday's 6-4 loss to the Houston Astros. Shoemaker was removed from the rotation in favor of Bailey Ober, who allowed two runs over five innings in his third start of the season. With Ober limiting the damage, the Twins created some of their own on the strength of four solo home runs.

Twins' Matt Shoemaker: Moving to bullpen

Shoemaker won't start Friday against the Astros as originally scheduled but will be available out of the bullpen, Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic reports. The Twins had reason to believe they'd be getting at least a competent back-end starter when they signed Shoemaker over the winter, as he'd recorded a 3.77 ERA in 18 starts over the previous three seasons. They haven't gotten anything close to that, however, as he owns a 7.28 ERA in 11 starts. His strikeout rate has plummeted to 14.5 percent, well below his previous career low of 20.4 percent, while his 9.0 percent walk rate is his worst mark since his five-inning debut back in 2015. Bailey Ober will start in his place Friday and will likely be pitching for the chance to remain in the rotation.

Matt Shoemaker rocked as Twins blown out by Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Matt Shoemaker, knocked out of the game early, had hours to reflect on his performance, and when he walked into the Target Field Zoom room in early May, he was blunt in his assessment. “That,” he said, “might have been the worst start of my career.”

Twins' Matt Shoemaker: Tagged for nine runs

Shoemaker (2-7) recorded just one out after allowing nine runs on six hits and two walks while striking out one batter in a brutal loss to the Royals on Friday. Shoemaker allowed the first five batters to reach before striking out Kelvin Gutierrez for the only out he recorded in Friday's start. The next four batters he faced all got on base and he was finally pulled after allowing a three-run homer to Whit Merrifield to cap off a nine-run first inning for the Royals. Shoemaker's previous career-high was seven earned runs allowed in a game and he broke that in excruciating fashion. He's given up a combined 14 runs over his last two starts and it's time to wonder if he's pitched for the Twins for the final time.

Twins' Matt Shoemaker: Staying in rotation for now

Shoemaker is staying in the Twins' starting rotation despite his recent struggles, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports. Shoemaker has struggled mightily of late, with his most recent start resulting in a disastrous eight earned runs in just one third of an inning. He'll remain in the Minnesota rotation for the time being, however, with his next start scheduled for Thursday against the Yankees.

Twins' Matt Shoemaker: Yields one run in no-decision

Shoemaker allowed a run on five hits and two walks over six innings in Monday's win over Baltimore. He struck out three and did not factor in the decision. After coughing up an RBI double to Anthony Santander in the first inning, Shoemaker kept the Orioles off the board for the rest of his outing. He allowed a few runners in scoring position but left the game with a 2-1 lead. The 34-year-old righty has allowed two or fewer runs in three of his last four starts, lowering his ERA to 5.48. Shoemaker is currently projected to face the Royals at home this weekend.

Twins' Matt Shoemaker: Dealt loss in quality start

Shoemaker (2-5) took the loss Wednesday against the White Sox after giving up two runs on five hits with four walks and two strikeouts over six innings. The right-hander had plenty of traffic on the basepaths but held Chicago to a pair of runs, though it wasn't enough to avoid his fifth loss. Shoemaker has a 6.08 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 25:16 K:BB across 40 innings this season.
