Mets select RHP Jerad Eickhoff, designate outfielder Mason Williams

The Mets have selected the contract of right-hander Jerad Eickhoff. Outfielder Mason Williams was designated for assignment to create space on the 26-man and 40-man rosters. Eickhoff signed a minor league deal in December that will now pay him $1.5M for reaching the big league roster. The righty (who turns 31 in July) has spent his entire MLB career in the NL East, having pitched with the Phillies from 2015-19 and initially looking like he could be a solid member of the rotation. Injuries overshadowed Eickhoff’s last three years in Philadelphia, however, and after being cut loose by the team, he inked minors contracts with the Padres and Rangers in 2020 but didn’t see any big league action.

Mets call up Jerad Eickhoff, designate Mason Williams for assignment

The Mets have called up right-handed pitcher Jerad Eickhoff, and to make room for him on the active roster, the team has designated outfielder Mason Williams for assignment. Williams was out of options and therefore had to be DFA’d to be removed from the active roster—despite the Mets having an open spot on the 40-man roster coming into the day.

Mets' Mason Williams: Sits after back-to-back starts

Williams is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Diamondbacks, Justin Toscano of The Bergen Record reports. Following his call-up from Triple-A Syracuse on Monday, Williams started in center field in the first two games of the series in Arizona, going 1-for-5 with a pair of walks between the contests. The Mets activated Kevin Pillar (nose) from the 10-day injured list Monday, but the team's desire to ease him back into action resulted in him hitting the bench both of the past two days. Pillar will be making his first start since his activation Wednesday, and it's likely that he'll continue to poach reps from Williams in center once his injury is further in the rear-view mirror.

Mets expected to activate Pete Alonso, select Mason Williams

The Mets are planning to reinstate first baseman Pete Alonso from the 10-day injured list, reports Buster Olney of ESPN (Twitter link). He’ll return from a hand sprain after spending the minimum amount of time on the IL. The 2019 NL Rookie of the Year got off to a fantastic start to the 2021 season, but his production has cratered since he was hit by a pitch on May 5. Mets fans are surely hoping the brief reset will allow him to recapture his previous levels of production.

Mets' Mason Williams: Called up, will start Monday

The Mets selected Williams' contract from Triple-A Syracuse. He'll start in center field and bat eighth in Monday's series opener in Arizona. Williams will join the 40-man and active rosters as a replacement in the outfield for Cameron Maybin, who was designated for assignment after going 1-for-28 in his nine games with the Mets. New York is hoping that Williams, a 29-year-old journeyman, will provide better production coming off a hot start to the season at Syracuse. Over his 19 games with the affiliate, Williams slashed .373/.458/.569 with a home run and two stolen bases. He'll likely be competing with Billy McKinney and Jose Peraza for a spot in New York's everyday outfield until the Mets get one of Michael Conforto (hamstring) or Brandon Nimmo (finger) from the injured list.
