Interview with Markus Reuter of supergroup Stick Men

Stick Men will perform at The Grey Eagle on April 23rd. Listen to Asheville FM for ticket giveaways. Local music writer Geary Yelton recently interviewed Markus Reuter (The Crimson Projeckt, Europa String Choir), who along with Pat Mastelotto (King Crimson, XTC) and Tony Levin (King Crimson, Peter Gabriel) play progressive rock music almost exclusively with Chapman Sticks, Touch Guitar and drums. Truce 2 by Markus Reuter (MoonJune Records)

Markus Reuter has worked in several formats for recent albums. On Truce 2, he’s on fire. At first, I misread the cover, thinking he was credited with “torch guitar.” It’s actually touch guitar but torch well describes his sonic assault. Accompanied by bassist Fabio Trentini and drummer Asef Sirkas, Reuter navigates rocky waves of sound, his guitar crunching and metallic, riding pounding yet fluid rhythms. Calling it school of Robert Fripp for a shorthand description in no way demeans the originality. “The Rake” opens the album like a choreographed shrapnel barrage. “Rounds of Love” and “Melomania” are moodier but no less intense (they’re neither love ballads nor mellow). Truce 2 was recorded in a spurt of energy over two days with minimal overdubs. The trio succeeded in catching lighting.

AMN Reviews: Markus Reuter – TRUCE 2 (2022; MoonJune Records)

Throw around the word “fusion” in music circles and you will receive varied reactions – from nodding approval to painful winces. Early efforts in this hybrid of jazz and rock (and sometimes blues or funk as well) include both landmark albums as well as examples of the excesses of the 1970s. The genre has remained alive through the modern day, much smaller and largely under the radar. Admittedly, I do not focus that much on modern fusion offshoots, but every so often an album comes across my speakers that perks me up. Markus Reuter’s TRUCE 2 is such a release.
