Former Secretary of Defense Mark Esper stopped by The Late Show With Stephen Colbert Monday night to promote his new memoir, but the interview was anything but a cakewalk. Colbert took the opportunity to grill Esper on the ethics of waiting to speak out against former President Donald Trump in his book, rather than doing so while in office.

(CNN) — Former Secretary of Defense Mark Esper was asked a very simple question by Fox's Bret Baier on Monday: "Do you think Donald Trump was a threat to democracy?" "I think that given the events of January 6, given how he has undermined the election results, he incited people to come to DC, stirred them up that morning and failed to call them off, to me, that threatens our democracy. ... I think the answer would -- what else can you conclude, Bret?"
Esper said he had to remind Trump that the "ships are built to fight and win, not win beauty contests."
