Mark Dantonio to compete with other coaches in Peach Bowl Challenge charity golf tournament

Michigan State football won the Peach Bowl over four months ago, yet there are still bragging rights to be won from the event, apparently. Retired Spartans coach Mark Dantonio is one of 22 current and former college football coaches selected to play in the Peach Bowl Challenge charity tournament Tuesday in metro Atlanta. The challenge competitors are playing for a share of a $330,000 charity purse. Dantonio’s winnings will be directed to MSU’s George Webster Scholarship.

Mark Dantonio and ties that bind Michigan State and Pittsburgh in Peach Bowl

ATLANTA – When Michigan State and Pittsburgh play in the Peach Bowl on Thursday night in Atlanta, Mark Dantonio will be in an awkward position. On one side are the Spartans, who Dantonio led to new heights during his 13 seasons guiding the program and are coached by Mel Tucker, a former colleague. On the other are the Panthers and head coach Pat Narduzzi, who served as Dantonio’s defensive coordinator for 11 seasons total before taking over Pittsburgh in 2015.

LOOK: Mark Dantonio returns to Michigan State for training camp visit

Former Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio was fond of saying “complete your circles,” meaning, basically, to finish what you started. It appears Dantonio has completed another one of his own circles by showing up to one of MSU’s training camp practices on Friday. In the past week, Dantonio has posted photos on social media of visits to Youngstown State, where his mentor and former boss Jim Tressel is the university president, Pittsburgh, where his longtime assistant Pat Narduzzi is the head coach, and Cincinnati, where his friend Luke Fickell serves as head coach and former assistant Mike Tressel is the defensive coordinator.
