Marc Staal
Marc Staal (born January 13, 1987) is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman and an alternate captain for the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League (NHL). He is the younger brother of Eric Staal of the Minnesota Wild, and the older brother of Jordan Staal of the Carolina Hurricanes, and Jared Staal. Of the four brothers, Marc is the only defenceman, as well as the only one who has never played for the Hurricanes.

SUNRISE, Fla. - Florida Panthers General Manager Bill Zito announced today that defenseman Marc Staal has agreed to terms on a one-year contract. "Marc is an accomplished veteran blueliner who brings so much to our team on and off the ice," said Zito. "A stable and reliable presence and a leader to our defensive corps, we are excited to welcome him to Florida."

Panthers sign Marc Staal to one-year deal, Eric Staal to PTO

Marc Staal was selected by the New York Rangers with the No. 12 overall pick in the 2005 NHL Draft. He spent 13 seasons with the Rangers but has been playing with the Detroit Red Wings for the past two seasons. The 35-year-old played his 1,000th NHL game last season.

The Florida Panthers have signed defenseman Marc Staal to a one-year deal worth $750,000, while also adding his brother, Eric Staal, on a tryout contract. Marc, 35, spent the past two years in Detroit after playing over a decade with the New York Rangers. A physical defenseman, Marc is far from the player to be, but his 16 points last year was his highest total since 2014-15.

Red Wings place Marc Staal in COVID protocol

It appears as though Marc Staal’s season is over, as the Detroit Red Wings announced Tuesday that the veteran defenseman has been placed in the COVID protocol. Staal would have had to test to travel with the team to Toronto for Tuesday’s game against the Maple Leafs. The team recalled Riley Barber and Kyle Criscuolo under emergency conditions earlier Tuesday.

Marc Staal named Detroit’s nominee for Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy

Detroit Red Wings defenseman Marc Staal has been nominated for the 2022 Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy by the Detroit chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association. Staal entered the NHL's COVID-19 protocols and will not play in Toronto on Tuesday. Given the mandatory five-day minimum COVID-19 waiting period, Staal will effectively be shut down until next season, as he won't be able to participate in Detroit's finale Friday in New Jersey.
