Florida Panthers Agree to Terms with Defenseman Marc Staal

SUNRISE, Fla. - Florida Panthers General Manager Bill Zito announced today that defenseman Marc Staal has agreed to terms on a one-year contract. "Marc is an accomplished veteran blueliner who brings so much to our team on and off the ice," said Zito. "A stable and reliable presence and a leader to our defensive corps, we are excited to welcome him to Florida."

Panthers sign Marc Staal to one-year deal, Eric Staal to PTO

Marc Staal was selected by the New York Rangers with the No. 12 overall pick in the 2005 NHL Draft. He spent 13 seasons with the Rangers but has been playing with the Detroit Red Wings for the past two seasons. The 35-year-old played his 1,000th NHL game last season.

Marc, 35, spent the past two years in Detroit after playing over a decade with the New York Rangers. Red Wings place Marc Staal in COVID protocol

It appears as though Marc Staal’s season is over, as the Detroit Red Wings announced Tuesday that the veteran defenseman has been placed in the COVID protocol. Staal would have had to test to travel with the team to Toronto for Tuesday’s game against the Maple Leafs. The team recalled Riley Barber and Kyle Criscuolo under emergency conditions earlier Tuesday.

Detroit Red Wings defenseman Marc Staal has been nominated for the 2022 Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy by the Detroit chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association.
