Malik Monk proved to be the best player the Los Angeles Lakers signed in the previous offseason as the shooting guard dazzled with his ability to score the basketball. Monk surprisingly did not get many offers in free agency, signing a one-year deal with the Lakers that looks silly in hindsight now. Monk will surely get his fair share of offers during this free agency period, but he has already revealed that money will not be the primary factor in his decision.

As one of only three players to play at least 65 games this season, Malik Monk was one of the few reliable pieces for the Lakers. That reliability came despite moving back and forth between the starting lineup and the bench as his role fluctuated based on which Lakers were available and which were injured.

There is quite some time until the offseason officially begins and we start getting concrete Los Angeles Lakers news. In the coming weeks, though, the offseason will begin to shape up as we learn more about what direction the team wants to take and which direction it can physically take.

Michael Scotto: Monk was a bright spot for the Lakers this season and gave the team great value while playing on a minimum contract and set himself up for a pay raise this summer. I spoke to four NBA executives who projected Malik Monk to earn an average annual salary somewhere between the taxpayer and non-taxpayer mid-level exception as of now. That would project to be somewhere between roughly the $6-10 million annual range. One executive specifically said, “Malik had a good year. I was surprised he was a minimum guy last year. I thought he should’ve been worth more than that. If you put Monk on a good team, his scoring and shooting is really important.”

Malik Monk set himself up for a rich payday after the 2021-22 season he had for the Los Angeles Lakers. Monk joined the Lakers on a one-year minimum deal and outplayed the value of his contract almost instantly, taking the reins as the team’s third most reliable scorer. Monk handled more offensive responsibility when L.A. was hit with injuries and he exceeded in an increased role, eventually earning a starting spot.

Due to the massive contracts of their three NBA All-Stars, the Los Angeles Lakers had minimal flexibility to fill out the rest of their roster. The Los Angeles Lakers’ 2021-22 season is finally over and while there might not be many fond memories that will come from it, Malik Monk certainly was a bright spot. With the Los Angeles Lakers’ 2021-22 season officially over, the entire focus will shift to the upcoming offseason. The franchise has a ton of work ahead of them to get back into playoff contention and one hard decision will come in NBA free agency with guard Malik Monk. After an impressive first season in L.A., the Lakers would like to get Monk back but he won’t come cheap.
