'Oxygen': Mélanie Laurent and Alexandre Aja Break Down Their Netflix Survival Thriller

From High Tension to Crawl, Alexandre Aja is known for crafting pulse-pounding survival movies, but his latest, the Netflix thriller Oxygen, the filmmaker leaves behind bloody set-pieces and deadly predators in favor of a contained sci-fi approach. Mélanie Laurent stars as a young woman who wakes up trapped in a high-tech medical pod with no memory of who she is and discovers she’s rapidly running out of oxygen. With only her wits and an A.I. system named M.I.L.O. (Mathieu Almaric), Laurent’s character has to puzzle out who she is, how she wound up in the pod, and most importantly, how she can get out alive.

Stream It Or Skip It: ‘Oxygen’ on Netflix, a Tense Hybrid-Thriller That Crams Poor Melanie Laurent in a Cryogenic Pod

Netflix’s Oxygen crams poor Melanie Laurent in a box for 100 minutes, and there surely are worse people to hang out with during a cramped, single-location movie. I mean, it could’ve been Mickey Rourke or something; Anne Hathaway was originally attached to the project, and we saw PLENTY of her weep-snot in closeup in Les Miserables and Interstellar. Anyway, Oxygen is from director Alexandre Aja, who’s compiling a kinda diverse resume of genre films — the very weird Daniel Radcliffe vehicle Horns, the 2006 remake of The Hills Have Eyes and 2019’s stupid-fun gators-attack/disaster-flick hybrid Crawl. Well, here’s another interesting one for his filmography.

Alexandre Aja on Translating Oxygen Into French, His Single-Location Obsession, and Casting Mélanie Laurent

French filmmaker Alexandre Aja’s newest film, Oxygen, finds Mélanie Laurent trapped inside a cryogenic chamber with a little less than 90 minutes of air left in her tank. A survival thriller set in the confines of a single pod, the Netflix feature is another entry into Aja’s single-location series, one that elevates into an expansive thrill ride of excitement and focused adrenaline.

Trailer: Melanie Laurent Races Against Time in Alexandre Aja's OXYGEN

Alexandre Aja's films seem to succeed most when his puts his characters almost immediately in dire situations, when they must race against the clock or within a limited space very quickly in order to survive (Crawl, Haute Tension). And it would seem in his new film Oxygen, he's combining both of these elements.

Full Trailer for Survival Sci-Fi Thriller 'Oxygen' with Mélanie Laurent

"Find what triggers your memories." Netflix has released the full-length official trailer for Oxygen, a new contained sci-fi survival thriller from filmmaker Alexandre Aja. We posted the teaser trailer for this just a month ago, and now this full trailer hints are more of what's happening inside here. A woman wakes up in a cryogenic chamber with no recollection of how she got there, and must find a way out before running out of air. That's all we know. Mélanie Laurent stars, though the cast includes a few other names like Mathieu Amalric (as the voice of her computer), Marc Saez, and Malik Zidi. I am very much looking forward to this, my kind of intelligent sci-fi. And whatever this score is here, I'm already madly in love with. Stunning.

‘Oxygen’ Teaser: Melanie Laurent Is Running Out Of Air In Alexandre Aja’s Netflix Thriller

Most people don’t know this about me, but I’m a little claustrophobic. It’s nothing quite as bad as my fear of heights or of drowning, but it still sucks. So a movie like Oxygen, which is entirely about someone being trapped in a confined space, is something I’ll likely pass, even though it features the talents of Melanie Laurent and director Alexandre Aja.
