As anticipated, the Detroit Red Wings traded defenseman Nick Leddy ahead of Monday afternoon's NHL trade deadline. Leddy goes to the St. Louis Blues for a 2023 second-round pick, forward Oskar Sundqvist and Jake Walman, the Wings announced an hour before the deadline. Leddy, 31, was scratched the past two Wings games as protection against injury, signaling general manager Steve Yzerman was going to trade the pending unrestricted free agent.
Witkowski was traded to the Blues from the Red Wings on Monday along with Nick Leddy in exchange for Jake Walman, Oskar Sundqvist and a 2023 second-round pick. Witkowski has been organizational depth for Detroit, and that will likely be the case in St. Louis as well. He'll likely report to the Blues' AHL affiliate and remain there barring multiple injuries to the big club's defense corps, which just got deeper with the addition of Leddy.
With Tyler Bertuzzi eligible to return to action against the Seattle Kraken on March 19, the Red Wings saw fit to return Witkowski to the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins. In 43 games with the Griffins this season, Witkowski has three goals and seven points. The Red Wings will drop...

Witkowski, 31, has skated in 43 games with the Griffins this season, posting seven points (3-4-7) and 62 penalty minutes. The Holland, Mich., native is in his second stint with the Red Wings after previously spending two seasons with the organization from 2017-19 and logging six points (1-5-6) and 86 penalty minutes in 65 games. Witkowski was sent down to AHL Grand Rapids on Monday. With the taxi squads set to go away coming out of the All-Star break, Witkowski should be expected to stop shuffling between levels and stick with the Griffins for a while. Still, if the Wings need reinforcements on the blue line, Witkowski's name should be near the top of potential call-ups despite having not played in an NHL game since 2019-20 with the Lightning.
The Red Wings recalled Witkowski from AHL Grand Rapids to the taxi squad Friday. The 31-year-old had been in the AHL since Sunday. Witkowski hasn't yet appeared in an NHL game this season and doesn't seem likely to, barring injuries and/or COVID-19 issues in Detroit's defense corps.
The Red Wings reassigned Witkowski to the taxi squad from AHL Grand Rapids on Wednesday. Witkowski bounced between rosters throughout December but never appeared in a game for the Red Wings. He hasn't played in the NHL since 2019-20, when he had a goal and two assists in 12 games with Tampa Bay.
