Logan Gilbert delivers strong start as Mariners get to Shane Bieber, Indians

The prospect vs. the proven. With the Mariners looking to erase the disappointment from giving away a victory on Saturday night and also try to salvage a last victory on what has been a brutal road trip, the starting pitching matchup of talented but inexperienced rookie Logan Gilbert vs. reigning American League Rookie of the Year Shane Bieber didn’t seem like an equation that would result in success.

Logan Gilbert (SP, SEA) - Week 10 Waiver Wire Pickups

ANALYSIS: It's a youth movement in Seattle, with better starts for some than others. Logan Gilbert was one of those who got off to a rocky start, but that fog appears to be clearing. The next time out, Gilbert went just 4.0 IP but allowed two ER, four hits, zero walks, and collected four strikeouts. His most recent outing was his best so far: 6.0 IP, two ER, five hits, one walk, and five strikeouts, bringing his total figures to 5.94 (ERA), 1.26 (WHIP), and 3.67 (FIP).

Mariners' Logan Gilbert: Struggles through 2.2 innings

Gilbert (0-2) took the loss against Detroit on Wednesday, pitching 2.2 innings and allowing three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out two. Gilbert needed 74 pitches to retire eight batters, and only 43 of his offerings went for strikes. He has now allowed seven runs over 6.2 frames on the campaign. The right-hander has been impressive in the minors, so his struggles so far in the big leagues can likely be chalked up to a learning curve, but he'll need to pitch better moving forward to remain in the rotation. His next chance to take the mound is tentatively scheduled for next Wednesday at Oakland.
