Music Reissues Weekly: Lenny Kaye Presents Lightning Striking

It might take a little while for this to be seen – early rumblings precede the lightning, but there’s usually a year which becomes fundamental. Lenny Kaye may be best known as Patti Smith’s foil, but there’s a whole lot more – all of which adds up to his unique perspective on the history of rock, a perception as acute as it’s engaging. In 1972, he compiled the double album Nuggets, which changed how the music of a then-recent past was seen. Garage rock, psychedelia, Sixties punk rock were systemised. Entertainingly so. Trail now blazed, masses of analogous compilations followed. Definition of another kind came with the Patti Smith Group, who helped characterise a version of New York. Furthermore, Kaye saw the Sex Pistols and The Clash in London in 1976.

Recently, Lenny Kaye posted a photograph of his younger self on his Instagram feed. Aged 12, he is standing on a street in Flatbush, Brooklyn in the summer of 1959, a tall, skinny, bespectacled kid who looks both nerdy and cool. In his new book, Lightning Striking, which maps the course of rock’n’roll through the cities that helped define it, he writes of that moment.

Trampin’ In The Poconos: Patti Smith Guitarist Lenny Kaye Brings The Peace And Noise To Stroudsburg, Pa.

He assembled 1972’s seminal and massively influential Nuggets compilation. He wrote for Rolling Stone, Melody Maker, Creem and many other mags that influenced MAGNET back in the day. So over the course of his 55 years in the music biz, Lenny Kaye has been all over the map. But on this September day in 2021, Kaye was in the small Poconos borough of Stroudsburg, Pa.
