Israeli artist Shira Barzilay was in town to personally introduce her first U.S. art installation, Soirée. The large-scale 24 ft. x 30 ft. wall mural, now visible at The Seville lounge at The James New York Nomad hotel, was celebrated last night with a champagne reception and an intimate dinner upstairs at the chic venue’s Scarpetta restaurant. Barzilay, aka Koketit, said the piece is an expression of “how an intuitive and dynamic process creates single lines that compile feminine figures and forms into one big celebration. ” Among those in attendance were Sophie Elgort, ABT principal dancer Skylar Brandt, pianist Chloe Flower, Jessie Nichols, Igee Okafor, Delanique Millwood, and CEO of LDV Hospitality, John Meadow.

In 1984, business was booming at Laura Ashley. The company, then headquartered in bucolic Wales, counted 4,500 employees around the world. Princess Diana, a loyalist of the label from her preschool-teacher days, had sanctified its homespun florals for the polo-match set. At the Madison Avenue boutique, rose-tendril wallpapers and puff-sleeved dresses reeled in those New Yorkers who found more comfort in Victoriana than Halston flash. Sales from that store alone brought in an annual $1 million, which explained the three additional Manhattan locations on deck for the following year. “In today’s high-tech world, how large, really, is the market for the quaint trappings of 19th-century life?” asked a New York Times journalist in 1984—an era when the floppy disk was cutting-edge enough to land on the cover of Time, a black plastic square balanced on a boyish Bill Gates’s fingertip. The brand’s staggering growth was answer enough.

A fan of the chintzy British textiles brand since her childhood, Hay remembers a sweet Laura Ashley dress she wore, much to her delight, at the age of four. The company’s print archive is the place the former lawyer’s mind wanders to in daydreams; it is her version of heaven.
Of all the brands which fell into administration in 2020, it was perhaps Laura Ashley which really tugged at the heartstrings. After years of profit warnings and uncertainty, the once iconic British label finally succumbed as the Covid crisis hit and was eventually bought by US investment firm Gordon Brothers.
When we got wind of Batsheva’s collaboration with Laura Ashley, we couldn’t quite think of a partnership that could be more perfectly aligned. And indeed, designer Batsheva Hay confirms that the iconic British lifestyle brand has been pinned to to her proverbial moodboard since day one. Launching today, the collaboration is a nostalgia-infused offering that fuses Batsheva signatures with archival floral prints and silhouettes plucked from the archives. The 15-piece collection, which features everything from aprons and mitts to matching mommy and me offerings, is coming just in time for the holidays too. We called the New York-based designer to get the inside scoop!
Batsheva Hay sort of fell into fashion by accident. In 2016, she took a vintage Laura Ashley dress to be remade in New York, where she lives, which she redesigned in several different fabrics. After receiving countless compliments from people on the street, she eventually launched her eponymous label, which has since been worn by everyone from Lena Dunham to Natalie Portman and Sarah Jessica Parker. Now, Hay has come full circle with a brand new collaboration with Laura Ashley.
