Utah to hire Utah State's Craig Smith to replace Larry Krystkowiak as Utes coach

Utah is hiring Utah State coach Craig Smith, sources told CBS Sports on Saturday. The school opted to stay in-state by plucking one of the more successful mid-major coaches in college basketball. Smith went 74-24 the past three seasons at Utah State. He previously coached at South Dakota, amassing a 79-55 mark in four seasons. The Aggies played in the past two NCAA Tournaments and were projected to make the 2020 NCAA Tournament that was never held. Utah State lost in the first round of this year's NCAA Tournament to No. 6 Texas Tech.

Last week, Utah athletic director Mark Harlan decided to relieve Larry Krystkowiak of his duties as head coach. Just because the Krystkowiak era is over in Utah, doesn’t mean the program picked up big wins along the way.

Utah parts way with Larry Krystkowiak

Many were wondering if the day would be coming where Utah would make a change with the coaching with the men’s basketball team, and that change came on Tuesday. Mark Harlan annoyed that the program will be going in a new direction and will begin the search for new head coach for the Runnin’ Utes. There was some speculation on Twitter if this was a mutual decision, if Coach K resigned, or if he was terminated. Reading the press release that Harlan put out, it reads like a termination.

Larry Krystkowiak timeline at Utah

2011-12 Krystkowiak takes over for Jim Boylen, who went to the NCAA Tournament with Utah in 2009 but slid after that. Boylen’s final two seasons saw the team go 14-17 and 13-18, and Krystkowiak took over a bare cupboard. Not surprisingly, Krystkowiak struggled in his first season, winning only six games in Utah’s first season as a member of the Pac-12.

Utah has fired coach Larry Krystkowiak, the school announced Tuesday. Krystkowiak had been in charge of the Utes for 10 seasons. "Today, I informed Head Men's Basketball Coach Larry Krystkowiak that I am making a change in the leadership of our men's basketball program," athletic director Mark Harlan said in a statement. Ultimately, our program needs a new voice, a new vision and a new leader who can build upon Larry's foundation and lead us to greater heights in the years ahead.

Utah AD Mark Harlan says no one thing led to firing of Larry Krystkowiak, but the trend line was not sustainable

There was no singular ‘aha’ moment that compelled Mark Harlan to fire Larry Krystkowiak late Tuesday afternoon. It wasn’t one game, one loss, one season that compelled the University of Utah athletic director to move toward the first major coaching change of his tenure in Salt Lake City. Removing his basketball coach on Tuesday was the byproduct of what this season was, and what the last few seasons have been in the wake of back-to-back NCAA Tournaments in 2015 and 2016.

Utah And Head Coach Larry Krystkowiak Part Ways After 10 Seasons

It's almost as if Larry Krystkowiak knew what was coming.
