Cardinals' Kyle Ryan: Assigned to Triple-A Memphis

Ryan was assigned to minor league camp Wednesday, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports. The relief pitcher was invited to spring training as a potential third left-handed option in the Cardinals' bullpen heading into the 2022 season, but he'll begin the campaign with Triple-A Memphis. Ryan struggled to a 6.75 ERA and 1.73 WHIP over 13.1 innings with the Cubs in 2021. He'll look to bring those numbers back down closer to his career averages of a 4.05 ERA and 1.38 WHIP this year.

Cardinals Signing Old Friend Kyle Ryan to a Minor League Deal

The Cardinals are gonna try to use some of that voodoo magic on an old friend. They’ve signed former Cubs lefty reliever Kyle Ryan to a minor league deal:. As you’ll recall, the Cubs and Ryan worked throughout the 2018 season at Triple-A Iowa to get him on track, and then he was fantastic for the big league team in 2019 (3.54 ERA, 3.85 FIP over 61.0 IP). The pandemic season saw him never get right after a delayed start, though, with his velocity way down, and pitch movement just not the same. He was getting results again in 2021 at Triple-A, but again the stuff didn’t quite look right in the big leagues, and the velocity never fully recovered.

The Cubs made another series of moves in a season that has been filled with such flurries, chief among which was placing Willson Contreras on the 10-day IL with a right knee sprain. The catcher had been looking a little fatigued recently, which is to be expected when you lead the majors in starts behind the plate, so this break should be good for him in the long run.
