Kofi Cockburn has finished up his first run of NBA action as the Las Vegas Summer League has come to a close. The Las Vegas portion of the NBA Summer League ran from July 7-17, and it featured one of the biggest puzzles in the game of basketball right now in Kofi. The former Illini big man would have obviously been a first-round NBA Draft picks 20 years ago, but the game today is played more on the perimeter, so it is harder for traditional big men to make a living in the game they once dominated.

The Las Vegas portion of the 2022 NBA Summer League is in full force right now. Two former Illini basketball players are suiting up for different teams in the Las Vegas summer league. Kofi Cockburn continues his run with the Utah Jazz while Malcolm Hill is under contract with the Chicago Bulls.

WCIA — Former Illini Kofi Cockburn’s first professional game is in the books. The Utah Jazz center scored five points and grabbed seven rebounds in a 98-77 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder Tuesday night in the Salt Lake City Summer League. Cockburn was not selected in last month’s NBA Draft but was signed by the Jazz shortly after, he’s now getting his first shot to try and make a professional roster after back-to-back All-American seasons at Illinois.

NBA Summer League is in full swing, and Illinois basketball fans have a reason to watch over the next week or so. Sadly, the Illini didn’t have a player picked in the 2022 NBA Draft. This was always a possibility, as Kofi Cockburn was a fringe draft prospect. But, even though zero Illinois players were selected, there are a couple of former players suiting up in the NBA Summer League.

Illinois basketball legend Kofi Cockburn earned the Male Athlete of the Year Award from the Illinois athletic department. Cockburn can now add another accolade to close out his Illini career. Tuesday afternoon, it was revealed that Cockburn, Illinois’ three-year center and NBA hopeful with the Utah Jazz, earned the Dike Eddleman Award as the school’s best male athlete, as voted on by the DIA and University Board of Trustees.
