Kofi Cockburn has finished up his first run of NBA action as the Las Vegas Summer League has come to a close. The Las Vegas portion of the NBA Summer League ran from July 7-17, and it featured one of the biggest puzzles in the game of basketball right now in Kofi. The former Illini big man would have obviously been a first-round NBA Draft picks 20 years ago, but the game today is played more on the perimeter, so it is harder for traditional big men to make a living in the game they once dominated.

NBA Summer League is in full swing, and Illinois basketball fans have a reason to watch over the next week or so. Sadly, the Illini didn’t have a player picked in the 2022 NBA Draft. This was always a possibility, as Kofi Cockburn was a fringe draft prospect. But, even though zero Illinois players were selected, there are a couple of former players suiting up in the NBA Summer League.

With the NBA Draft officially behind us and all 58 of this year's picks made, there are many -- many! -- players who were worthy of being selected but who unfortunately were not. Among those who did not hear their name called on draft night were Big Ten star Kofi Cockburn, Scotty Pippen Jr., Jean Montero and a host of other college standouts who somehow flew under the radar.
Kofi is a part of the Jazz. Months of preparation that included the NBA Draft Combine and multiple pre-draft workouts with teams such as the Charlotte Hornets, Atlanta Hawks, Utah Jazz, and Washington Wizards led to Cockburn signing Friday as a free agent wirh Utah. Despite no one getting drafted into the NBA on Thursday night, the Illinois basketball team now has another player heading to The Association. As expected, no Illini players were selected in the 2022 NBA Draft. While I had hoped maybe just maybe one player would sneak into the bottom of the second round, I realized that the likelihood was extremely low.
