Knute Nelson (born Knud Evanger; February 2, 1843 – April 28, 1923) was an American attorney and politician active in both Wisconsin and Minnesota. A Republican, he served in state and national positions: he was elected to the Wisconsin and Minnesota legislatures, was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and the United States Senate from Minnesota, and he served as the 12th Governor of Minnesota from 1893–1895. He is known for promoting the Nelson Act of 1889 to consolidate the Ojibwe/Chippewa in Minnesota on a western reservation in the state, and require the breakup of their communal land by allotting it to individual households, with sales of the remainder to anyone, including non-natives. This was similar to the Dawes Act of 1887, which had applied to Native American lands in the Indian Territory.

UCare and LeadingAge Minnesota partnership aids Knute Nelson

MINNEAPOLIS, Dec. 8, 2021 ─ UCare, a community-based, nonprofit health plan, is partnering with the philanthropic arm of LeadingAge Minnesota, LeadingAge MN Foundation (LAMF), to bring a visionary new model of integrated care to aging adults living in rural communities in west central Minnesota. Through separate funding, LAMF has awarded Connected Communities for Healthy Aging pilot grants of $800,000 each to two LeadingAge Minnesota members – Knute Nelson in Alexandria, Minnesota and Perham Health in Perham. The UCare Foundation contributed an additional $100,000 to each organization to support program design and implementation through year-end 2022.

Music helps heal the soul, says Knute Nelson certified music practitioner

As a certified music practitioner, Sara Severson of Alexandria uses her voice and her guitar to provide therapeutic music to Knute Nelson Hospice patients. She explained that therapeutic music is a non-invasive holistic approach to healing. It occurs in front of a patient, one-on-one, by using instruments – string, wind instruments or voice – as a healing presence.

Knute Nelson initiates use of new hospice care tool

Knute Nelson Hospice recently added a new information-gathering tool that helps provide more personalized care during patients’ last days. The tool analyzes more than 11,000 data points, documented from nursing and social work visits. For example, if a nurse documents a medication change due to shortness of breath, the program increases that patient's visit frequency for the social worker, registered nurse, and home health aide.
