The coaching search continues for the Philadelphia Flyers. Uncertainty about the overall direction of the franchise looms, and the announcement of a new head coach will be the first major indicator of what to expect for an organization that has spiraled into futility over the past two seasons. The most recognizable available names like John Tortorella and Barry Trotz have dominated the conversation, but Calgary Flames associate coach Kirk Muller has now emerged as a darkhorse candidate to earn the nod.

The Philadelphia Flyers are on the lookout for a coach and have already been linked to some big names. Barry Trotz and John Tortorella have reportedly already had their interviews with the club, though it does not appear as though the team is in any rush to make a final decision. Today, on the 32 Thoughts podcast, hosts Jeff Marek and Elliotte Friedman linked another few names to the Flyers, including recently eliminated Calgary Flames associate coach Kirk Muller, and Pittsburgh Penguins assistant Mike Vellucci.

Flyers coaching search: Barry Trotz has interview, Flames' Kirk Muller has interest

Barry Trotz has had his interview with the Flyers, per Jeff Marek and Elliotte Friedman on Friday's edition of the 32 Thoughts podcast. The Flyers have also interviewed Pittsburgh Penguins assistant coach Mike Vellucci, according to Friedman, and have interest in Calgary assistant Kirk Muller too, who should start getting interviews now that the Flames have been eliminated from the playoffs.

Darryl Sutter has a new right-hand man. The Calgary Flames have added Kirk Muller to their coaching staff as an associate bench boss, the team announced Thursday. Muller served as the associate coach with the Montreal Canadiens for the past five seasons. He was fired along with head coach Claude Julien on Feb. 24. He was the head coach of the Carolina Hurricanes for parts of three seasons from 2011 to 2014.
