Islanders' Kieffer Bellows: Needs improvement

Bellows finished the season with six goals, 19 points and a minus-1 rating in 45 games. Bellows hasn't been the player the Islanders hoped for since they drafted him in the first round, 19th overall, of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. Bellows has only 11 career goals in 67 games. If he remains with the Islanders next season, he will likely once again find himself as a spare part, needing an injury or two to get into the lineup on a regular basis.

Bellows logged an assist, six hits and two blocked shots in Friday's 3-0 win over the Canadiens. Bellows missed time with an illness and as a healthy scratch to begin April, but he's now played in consecutive games. He helped out on Zach Parise's opening tally Friday. Bellows had gone 10 games without a point prior to this contest, and he's posted four goals, 10 assists, 62 shots on net, 84 hits and an even plus-minus rating in 37 outings. He'll likely be limited to bottom-six minutes if he can retain a regular role in the lineup.

Islanders' Kieffer Bellows: Stepping back into lineup

Bellows (illness) will retake his place in the lineup against Pittsburgh on Thursday, Wes Crosby of NHL.com reports. Even prior to his illness, Bellow was a healthy scratch for five straight matchups, so his hold on a lineup spot should be considered tenuous at best. Even when he has played, the 23-year-old Minnesota native has struggled to produce as he is mired in a nine-game pointless steak. As such, fantasy players shouldn't be expecting much out of Bellows down the stretch.

Islanders' Kieffer Bellows: Dealing with illness

Bellows (illness) won't play Tuesday versus the Penguins, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports. Bellows has often been a healthy scratch anyways, so this won't make much of a difference for fantasy managers. The 23-year-old will be out of the lineup for his sixth straight game Tuesday, though a return to practice or warmups down the line will indicate he's cleared his illness.

Islanders' Kieffer Bellows: Healthy scratch for five straight

Bellows was a healthy scratch for the fifth straight game as the Islanders lost to the Blues 6-1 on Saturday. Bellows was expected to play Saturday as the Islanders needed an extra forward with Casey Cizikas serving a one-game suspension. However, the Islanders instead elected to recall Andy Andreoff from the AHL for that spot. This was likely because coach Barry Trotz preferred to use a center rather than a wing to fill in for the suspended pivot. Bellows' next chance to play will come Tuesday against the Penguins.

Islanders' Kieffer Bellows: Healthy scratch once again

Bellows will be a healthy scratch for the second straight game when the Islanders take on the Capitals on Tuesday, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports. This absence will mean that Bellows has now been a healthy scratch for three of the past four games for the Islanders. Before this recent stretch, the Islanders did seem to give him a chance to play as they played Bellows in 10 straight games, but he only had one goal and three assists in those games. Bellows will likely need a forward or two to be dealt by the trade deadline on Monday to see consistent time with the Islanders this season, and he may be best suited for a change of scenery in the future.

Islanders' Kieffer Bellows: Healthy scratch for five straight

Bellows was a healthy scratch once again as the Islanders defeated the Canucks 6-3 on Wednesday. It wasn't a good sign for those that want to see Bellows play as Ross Johnston was started over him against the Canucks. Bellows only has three goals and six assists in 20 games for the Islanders this season, so it's not like he is forcing the hand of coach Barry Trotz. Right now, Trotz prefers the physicality of Johnston over the skill of Bellows.

Islanders' Kieffer Bellows: Could lose playing time

Bellows could be the odd man out of the lineup now that the Islanders have a completely healthy forward group, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports. Coach Barry Trotz believes that Bellows is best served to play on the left side, which would eliminate him playing on a line with Mathew Barzal and Anders Lee, a position that has been wide open for most of the season. Trotz has been giving tryouts to just about every forward for that line. If Bellows can't play with Barzal, that likely leaves him competing with Kyle Palmieri for a role on the third line. It's also likely that Trotz will keep rotating this duo and possibly others until one gets hot and starts putting the biscuit in the basket, or one is just playing better than the other.

Islanders' Kieffer Bellows: Two-point night against Sabres

Bellows scored a goal and a power-play assist in Thursday's 4-1 win over the Sabres. Bellows hasn't been a mainstay in the Islanders' lineup, but he'll earn more playing time if he keeps scoring given the team's struggles offensively. The 2016 first-round pick has two goals and an assist in his last two games, and his seven points this season represent more than half of Bellows' career scoring output at the NHL level.
