Khris Davis placed on release waivers

Rangers release Khris Davis, who will likely become free agent

The Rangers announced they’ve placed Khris Davis on unconditional release waivers. This was the expected outcome after the club designated Davis for assignment on Tuesday. Texas acquired the designated hitter/corner outfielder from the A’s over the winter. While they surely hoped he’d rebound from back-to-back down seasons at the plate, the primary motivation for the trade was financial. The Rangers sent Elvis Andrus, owed $14M in both 2021 and 2022, to Oakland in exchange for Davis’ expiring $16.75M contract and a pair of prospects. (Texas is paying down $13.5M of Andrus’ contract over the next two years.) The deal allowed the Rangers to assume more money in 2021, when they didn’t expect to contend anyhow, to shave nearly $7M off their 2022 books.

Indians: Cleveland can’t afford to not go after Khris Davis

The Indians should be going hard after Khris Davis. The Texas Rangers designated the 33-year-old power hitter for assignment on Tuesday, ending the ballclub’s affiliation with Khris Davis. The former star with the Oakland A’s, Davis has been a well-regarded power-hitter, but his average was never that impressive; topping out at a career .241. The Rangers saw Davis struggle through the first two months of the 2021 season and ended up designating him for assignment, making him priority one for the Indians.

Texas Rangers finally designated Khris Davis for assignment

Well, that was… certainly a trade for the Texas Rangers. After acquiring Khris Davis in a deal that sent longtime Ranger Elvis Andrus to Oakland, Texas felt like they had a great situation on their hands; a power hitting outfielder that was low-cost, high-reward on an expiring contract. Unfortunately, things...

He began the season on the injured list with a strained left quad.

Rangers' Khris Davis: Designated for assignment

Davis (illness) was designated for assignment by the Rangers on Tuesday. Davis produced a wRC+ of exactly 82 in each of his final two years as an Athletic, and things only got worse for him following an offseason trade to the Rangers. In 22 games, he hit just .157/.262/.333, good for a wRC+ of 67. There's unlikely to be much of a market on the waiver wire for a 33-year-old designated hitter who's been well below average for three straight seasons. The transaction should open up the DH spot for Willie Calhoun, allowing the Rangers to start more accomplished defenders in left field such as Eli White, who was recalled in a corresponding move and will fill the position Tuesday against the Giants.
