The Blue Jays are in the mix amidst American League contenders, but they are off the pace in the division race with the Yankees early on. Toronto will look to make up ground in the division by sweeping a frisky Seattle Mariners team with ace Kevin Gausman on the mound on Wednesday night at home.

Gausman (3-3) took the loss against Seattle on Wednesday, pitching five innings and allowing two runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out three batters. Gausman didn't have his usual swing-and-miss stuff against the Mariners in the outing, as he notched a season-low three strikeouts and registered only seven swinging strikes. However, he limited Seattle to two runs and allowed just one extra-base hit -- a fifth-inning homer by Cal Raleigh that was the deciding factor in tagging Gausman with the loss. The right-hander will carry a 2.52 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 57:3 K:BB into his next start, which is slated to come in St. Louis next week.

The Blue Jays, widely presumed to be the beasts of the East, have lost four in a row and have been passed by the now second-place Rays. Tampa Bay has won seven of its last 10. CLEVELAND - There was some uncertainty as to how Kevin Gausman would fare in his return to the American League East, where his career began with Baltimore in 2013. He debuted as a top prospect only a year after being selected fourth overall out of LSU, but endured an uneven five-and-a-half years with the Orioles, hampered by the smaller parks and strong lineups of the division.

Kevin Gausman has been incredible in his first six starts with the Blue Jays this season. In 38 innings, Gausman has struck out 46 while only walking a single batter. He set a franchise record for innings pitched without allowing a walk and has been worth every penny of the $110 million deal that was signed in the offseason, at least so far. Gausman’s success can be largely attributed to his signature pitch—the split-finger fastball.

Gausman and the Blue Jays won't play Friday against the Guardians after the game was postponed due to inclement weather. Since Friday's game will be made up as part of a doubleheader Saturday, Gausman will start in the matinee while Ross Stripling takes the mound in the second game, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports. The right-hander is off to a hot start in 2022, as he has a 2.27 ERA and 0.98 WHIP with 41 strikeouts and no walks in 31.2 innings over his first five starts.
