Manga creator Kentaro Miura dies at age 54

Kentaro Miura, who reached a worldwide readership for more than 30 years with his Japanese manga series, "Berserk," which set the standard for artistic originality and narrative boldness in the fantasy media industry, with successes in card games, comics, video games and animated series, died May 6. He was 54.

Berserk fans are still mourning the loss of the anime franchise's creator, Kentaro Miura, who passed earlier this month and left a major hole in the world of manga and anime, and one fan has taken the opportunity to compile the gorgeously terrifying monsters known as Apostles that helped make the series so beloved. The monsters referred to as "Apostles", where once human that were granted supernatural abilities as a result of the pacts they made with these god-like beings known as the Godhand and Miura was able to depict them with such detail that they remain some of the scariest in the medium of manga.

Players of the MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV have reportedly been holding online vigils for the belated creator of Berserk Kentaro Miura. According to Twitter user @SirBadOpinions, users in game have been switching to the Dark Knight class whose weapon is similar to the one used by Guts in the series Berserk; and the class’s animations and weapon are speculatively inspired by the popular character.

Last night, it was announced that Kentaro Miura, creator of the dark fantasy manga Berserk, passed away two weeks ago. The manga has influenced many works across all media, from anime, to film, and, of course, to video games. On that latter point, I do feel inspired by the players of Final Fantasy XIV who, last night following the news of Miura’s passing, banded together to pay their final respects to the famed creator of Berserk.
