Ken Casanega, last living member of original 49ers, dies at 100

Ken Casanega, who was the oldest living 49er and the last surviving member of the franchise’s original 1946 team, died Sunday at 100 in Medford, Ore. Casanega, an Oakland native who was an All-America halfback at Santa Clara when the now-defunct program was a national power, was among the NFL’s oldest alumni. The league’s alumni association doesn’t have complete records, but the Lions referred to Cecil Souders as the NFL’s oldest living player when he died Aug. 30. Souders was 46 days older than Casanega.
