Davis’ Dispatches with Julie Davis: Chapman nominated for state Hall of Fame

The late Calvin Chapman finally got his hearing in front of the Nebraska Hall of Fame Commission, but his most enthusiastic supporter was not in attendance. Chapman’s great-granddaughter, Teresa Geer-Teater, has been faithfully submitting her ancestor for consideration by the commission (she called and visited the News-Press offices to discuss her project, and I last spoke with her about her great-grandfather while standing alongside her car on Central Avenue on a brisk December day in 2021), and her date had been set: July 20. Unfortunately, she passed away unexpectedly on July 12, and the application she had prepared for Chapman was submitted by her daughter and read into the official record by a member of the Hall of Fame Commission.

Davis’ Dispatches with Julie Davis: Arbor Day lessons

There certainly were plenty of reasons to celebrate this year’s Arbor Day. In addition to it being the 150th anniversary of our hometown holiday’s first celebration, it also marked the 50th anniversary of the Nemaha Natural Resources District and the Arbor Day Foundation. As you might expect in...

Davis’ Dispatches with Julie Davis: Just like old times

Kudos to Nebraska City Tourism and Commerce for three ribbon cuttings in as many days a week ago. It felt like the good old days before COVID!. Day 1 was Friends of Faith, and the ribbon cutting there celebrated the fact that Friends of Faith has been able to purchase the building it’s rented for many years…while also providing almost a half-million dollars of help to a variety of community groups in the past decade-plus.

Davis’ Dispatches with Julie Davis: Changes continue

As we settle in to Month 4 with CherryRoad Media, we received our new company laptop computers and have begun to be trained on them. After spending quite a lot of my in-office career with the Apple family of products and my freelance life divided between macs and PCs, I find myself in a bit of a learning curve at the moment (Which machine am I on? What did I want to do next? How do I do it on this particular machine? and so on).

Davis' Dispatches with Julie Davis

How do you define ‘community’? Better yet, how do you create one?. This is one of the undelying messages of the series of Community Conversations that the Morton-James Public Library has sponsored monthly since September. The conversations bring together a random group of Nebraska Citians for an hour or so to talk about whatever is on their minds.

Julie Davis on Winter Plein Air Painting, What to Wear and the Allure of Mount Mansfield

Julie Davis is "driven to paint," she said, insisting that subject matter is less important to her than the act of applying brush to canvas. Still, the majority of her paintings are plein air landscapes. "I love to be outdoors," she said simply. But also, Davis reasoned during an interview at her Cambridge home, "it's easier to get more immersed, and it's less distracting if you're outside."
