Washington Nationals news & notes: Davey Martinez on Juan Soto hitting 2nd & Rubber Man + a Sean Doolittle update...

Going into last night’s game, Juan Soto’s 138 plate appearances for Washington’s Nationals early this season were second-most on the team, behind only Nationals’ leadoff man César Hernández’s 140, and Soto had 27 PAs in a month-plus with runners in scoring position, though the 23-year-old slugger was 2 for 24 (.083/.185/.083) in those plate appearances, with two RBIs, three walks, and eight Ks.

Nationals' Juan Soto: Belts seventh homer

Soto went 1-for-4 with a walk and a two-run home run in Wednesday's 8-3 win over the Mets. The Nationals found themselves in a 3-0 hole after the top of the first inning, but Soto quickly got to work erasing the deficit by taking Tylor Megill deep in the bottom of the frame. The homer was Soto's seventh of the season but his first with any runners on base, and he has a stunningly low 10 RBI through 32 games to go along with his .256/.392/.479 slash line.

Nationals' Juan Soto: Tallies eighth homer

Soto went 2-for-4 with a solo home run Thursday against the Mets. Soto was the Nationals' lone source of offense as he took Edwin Diaz yard in the ninth inning to record his eighth homer of the season. He's gone yard in back-to-back games and has at least one hit in nine of his last 10 starts. Overall, Soto has delivered a .264/.395/.512 line with 23 runs scored and 11 RBI across 147 plate appearances on the season.

Nationals' Juan Soto: Smacks sixth homer

Soto went 2-for-3 with a home solo home run, a double, two walks and two runs scored Thursday against the Rockies. Soto took Antonio Senzatela yard in the first inning to record his sixth home run of the season. After a relative lack of power early in the campaign, Soto has smacked three home runs in his last six starts. Overall, he has maintained a .271/.417/.510 line to go along with seven RBI and 21 runs scored across 120 plate appearances.

Nationals' Juan Soto: Socks fifth homer

Soto went 1-for-5 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 10-2 win over the Rockies. The fifth-inning blast off German Marquez was Soto's fifth homer of the year, but incredibly, all five have been solo shots. The 23-year-old has only one other RBI through 25 games as teams continue to pitch around him with runners on base, and his resulting .258/.405/.472 is well below expectations, Josh Bell is swinging a hot bat behind Soto in the lineup, but it seems unlikely pitchers will change their approach toward him as long as it keeps the Nationals' biggest threat in check.

Washington Nationals’ Juan Soto slow out of the gate again; but might have just found his swing...

Juan Soto finished up Washington’s 10-game homestand 6 for 32 (.188/.366/.281), taking the 23-year-old Nationals’ outfielder from a .289/.460/.553 line on April 17th to .243/.418/.429 at the end of the day on Thursday. Soto’s manager, Davey Martinez, talked at length before the series finale with Miami’s Marlins in the nation’s capital, about what he’d seen from the Nats’ No. 2 hitter in the first month of Soto’s fifth big league season, and he said he’s planning on keeping him where he is in the two-spot for now.

Nationals' Juan Soto: Goes deep in win

Soto went 2-for-5 with a home run, a walk, two RBI and two runs scored in a 14-4 victory against San Francisco on Friday. Soto opened the scoring with a solo shot off Giants starter Alex Cobb in the first inning, singled home a run in the sixth and walked and scored in the eighth. After an 0-for-8 stretch last weekend, the 23-year-old has responded by going 4-for-13 with five walks over his last four games and currently leads MLB in walk rate. Soto's now slashing .253/.423/.467 with four home runs, though he has just five RBI due to a lack of talent surrounding him.

For Juan Soto and the Nats, this has to be the low point, right?

Part of the selling point for the Washington Nationals this season -- and let's be honest, there isn't much to sell -- was that whatever the state of the team around him, at least Juan Soto would have four or five plate appearances a night. The team might lose -- and lose and lose and lose, because the streak has now reached eight, all at home. But Soto could do anything to any pitch he sees, and that is some combination of intriguing and alluring, no matter the record or the score.
