Classical Austrian composer Joseph Haydn died on this day in 1809. Known to be an influential figure in the development of chamber music, Haydn was close friends with Mozart and a teacher to Beethoven. Throughout his life, he wrote 107 symphonies, 83 string quartets, 45 piano trios, 62 piano sonatas, 26 operas, amongst many other works.

Joseph Haydn, in full Franz Joseph Haydn, (born March 31, 1732, Rohrau, Austria—died May 31, 1809, Vienna), Austrian composer who was one of the most important figures in the development of the Classical style in music during the 18th century. He helped establish the forms and styles for the string quartet and the symphony.
