Javier Báez had remarkable at-bats against brother-in-law Jose Berríos, including a walk and a home run

A remarkable, but far from unknown, thing in professional sports is when brothers-in-law face each other on the field. That happened twice in a MLB game between the Detroit Tigers and Toronto Blue Jays Sunday, where the Tigers’ Javier Báez had two remarkable at-bats against his brother-in-law, Blue Jays’ starting pitcher Jose Berríos. The first at-bat, in the first inning, saw Báez foul off four pitches (with two of those looking like potential home runs) before finally earning a walk:

Matt Chapman, Jose Berrios lift Blue Jays past Tigers

Matt Chapman belted a two-run homer and Jose Berrios pitched seven strong innings to fuel the Toronto Blue Jays to a 4-1 win over the visiting Detroit Tigers on Sunday afternoon. Chapman had two of the six hits for the Blue Jays, who won three of the four games in...

Blue Jays take series behind a strong start from Jose Berrios

Like Cam said on the podcast last Thursday, the Blue Jays have been getting extremely consistent starts from Jose Berrios. The Jays got another one from Berrios on Sunday afternoon, heavily contributing to a 4-1 win over Detroit. With that win, Toronto took the series, and are now 7-2 since the All-Star break.

Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Quality start vs. Royals

Berrios gave up two earned runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out seven in 6.1 innings Sunday against the Royals. He did not factor in the decision. Berrios logged his third straight quality start against a depleted Royals lineup. While Berrios' season ERA is 5.22, he has not given up more than three earned runs and has not pitched fewer than five innings in any of his last eight home starts. His road struggles will likely be put to the test next weekend in Boston.

Could White Sox RHP Lucas Giolito be this season's Jose Berrios?

On this date one year ago, the Minnesota Twins were 39-50, placing them 15 games behind the White Sox in the AL Central and 11.5 games out of a wild-card spot. They fell a little bit further back by the deadline and decided they had to do some selling. This was surely a disappointing result after two straight division titles and three postseason berths in four years, but they didn’t have much choice. Injuries and underperformance forced them to punt the season for the sake of the future. However, they still wanted to return to competing in 2022, selling only rentals like Nelson Cruz, J.A. Happ and Hansel Robles. The one exception was José Berríos, who had a year-and-a-half of team control at the time.

Fantasy Baseball Today: Chris Sale returns and Jose Berrios confuses again

We had a few important season debuts in Tuesday's MLB action, with Padres prospect Esteury Ruiz's MLB debut looking like one especially impactful one for Fantasy players. If you remember from yesterday, Ruiz got the call after hitting .333/.467/.560 with 60 steals in 77 games, which makes him look like a potential Fantasy superstar.

Jose Berrios fans 13 as Blue Jays best Phillies

Right-hander Jose Berrios matched his career best with 13 strikeouts, Teoscar Hernandez had a two-run double and the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the visiting Philadelphia Phillies 4-3 on Tuesday night. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. had four hits including the go-ahead RBI double in the sixth for the Blue Jays, who ended...

Blue Jays: Has starter Jose Berrios turned a corner in July?

The Toronto Blue Jays pitching staff has been a sore spot for fans for the majority of the past couple of months. The rotation has been dealt some blows with Hyun Jin Ryu being shut down due to Tommy John surgery, Yusei Kikuchi continuing to struggle on the mound, and the recent injury to Kevin Gausman forcing manager Charlie Montoyo to get creative with who starts in his absence these past two weeks. That’s not to say there haven’t been bright spots, as Gausman owns the highest fWAR amongst pitchers in the league, Alek Manoah dominates on a nightly basis, and Ross Stripling is turning in a great season as well, but the rotation plus the bullpen has accounted for some frustrating losses as of late.
