Despite age and injury, José Altuve is flourishing at the plate

José Altuve is supposed to be trending downward. The 2017 AL MVP is on the wrong side of 30 and has been dealing with a nagging hamstring injury since April 20. The wear and tear of playing more than 1,500 games in the big leagues across 11-plus years is undoubtedly impacting him physically. But somehow, seemingly none of it has hampered Altuve’s ability to hit.

Astros' Jose Altuve: Exits early as precaution

Altuve exited Friday's game against the Nationals as a precaution after slipping on the grass, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. Altuve was replaced at second base by Niko Goodrum in the bottom of the ninth inning with the Astros up by five runs, circumstances which seemingly back up the idea that the team isn't particularly worried about his health. He was due for a day off Saturday anyway according to manager Dusty Baker, so the Astros can be doubly sure the veteran isn't dealing with any serious issue. Altuve went 1-for-4 with a solo homer to lead off the game prior to his early exit.

Astros owner Jim Crane fired back at comments made by New York Yankees executive Brian Cashman concerning Houston's sign-stealing scandal on Wednesday in USA Today article. "I found his comments to be extremely strange,'' Crane told Bob Nightengale in an interview. "There's the letter, and you were doing it, too. You were there dude. What are you talking about? If I was one of the teams, and I knew our team was doing it [cheating], I'd keep my mouth shut and just go about our business. But listen, I can only control what's going on here. I can't control what the other guys do.''

Astros' Jose Altuve: Reaches three times

Altuve went 2-for-3 with a walk Friday against the Tigers. Altuve is hitting only .235 across 60 plate appearances, though he has at least one hit in seven of his last eight games. He's also walked nine times while striking out on just 11 occasions this season, so his plate skills remain intact. Most importantly, Altuve has maintained the leadoff role in a potent Astros lineup, which should allow him to rack up runs scored as he starts to collect hits at an increased rate.
