Jorge Soler Cleared the Bases … on a Groundball to Shortstop

As a fan of the 2022 Chicago Cubs (14-20), I’m not really in a position to throw stones at the Washington Nationals (12-25) this season … but I will anyway. After all, misery loves company, and this was one embarrassing series of events. Watch as Marlins outfielder (and...

Brian Anderson will pick up the start in the outfield in place of Soler, who is sitting for only the third time through the Marlins' first 36 games of the season. Marlins' Jorge Soler: On base four times Sunday

Soler went 3-for-4 with a walk in Sunday's loss to the Giants. Don Mattingly made the seemingly odd choice to put Soler in the leadoff spot to begin the season despite his power profile and mediocre .316 OBP last season, but so far the Marlins manager is looking like a genius. Through his first three games with Miami, Soler has reached base six times in 14 plate appearances, although the 30-year-old is still looking for his first extra-base hit, run or RBI.

Marlins' Jorge Soler: Slugs first spring homer

Soler went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Mets. The slugger took Chris Bassitt deep in the first inning for his first homer this spring. Soler has been getting a look in the leadoff spot for manager Don Mattingly, an unorthodox choice given his power and .316 OBP last season, but the 30-year-old did post a .354 mark in that category in 2019 for the Royals. If he sticks atop the lineup, Soler would likely trade some RBI for runs over the course of the season, but the Marlins' batting order could be fluid all year.

Soler went 3-for-4 with two runs on Saturday during the Marlins' 9-2 win over St. Louis. Soler was making his Marlins debut after signing a three year, $36 million contract a week ago.
