Indians' Jordan Luplow: Begins rehab assignment

Luplow (ankle) began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Columbus on Friday. Luplow has been sidelined since May 27 with an ankle injury. He went 0-for-2 with a walk and a strikeout in his first game with Columbus. The outfielder will likely need another couple of games with the farm team before he's ready to return to the big-league roster.

CLEVELAND -- Indians outfielder Jordan Luplow has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a sprained left ankle. Luplow has been dealing with an ankle issue since training camp, and continued soreness and swelling over the past few days forced the Indians to make the move Friday before opening a three-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Jordan Luplow is heading to the injured list with a sore ankle, the Cleveland Indians announced Friday. Luplow, 27, aggravated the ankle running out a ground ball May 17 in Los Angeles, but has appeared in several games since then. It’s the same ankle Luplow twisted March 4 in spring training and has been dealing with throughout the early part of the season.

Luplow underwent an MRI on Saturday which revealed no structural issues in his left ankle, Tom Withers of the Associated Press reports. Luplow missed time in mid-May with a left ankle issue but had since returned to the lineup before being placed on the injured list Friday. While the MRI revealed good news for the outfielder, his return timeline won't become clear until he's reevaluated in a week.

Luplow isn't starting Thursday's game against the Tigers due to an ankle injury, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports. Luplow had missed time earlier in the month due to an ankle injury but had started each of the last two games. Eddie Rosario, Bradley Zimmer and Harold Ramirez will start in the outfield from left to right.

Luplow went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer during Tuesday's win over the Tigers. Luplow left the yard against Kyle Funkhouser in the eighth inning, tacking on a pair of insurance runs for Cleveland while snapping a seven-game hitless drought. The long ball was the seventh of the year for Luplow, but his first since April 26. Across 35 games, he's batting .168/.319/.442, which isn't helping him make a case for extra playing time.

Luplow (ankle) is starting in center field and batting sixth Friday versus Minnesota. The 27-year-old missed the past two games after picking up an ankle injury Monday, but he's good to go coming out of Thursday's scheduled off day. Luplow is 3-for-17 with two doubles, four walks, an RBI and a run over his past seven games.
