Volunteers Needed For John Wesley Powell River Fest This Weekend

The 2022 John Wesley Powell Riverfest is coming up this weekend and the help of the community is needed. The Vernal Chamber is seeking volunteers throughout the activities each day. The events run July 28th, 29th, and 30th at the park in front of the Uintah County Library. Events include a corn hole tournament, kayak and paddle demos, art in the park, a cook off, a smoke off, and of course plenty of live music. Sign up on the Vernal Chamber Facebook page or contact the Vernal Chamber Office.

Local Making Progress On John Wesley Powell Musical

A local’s dream of creating a musical based on the life of John Wesley Powell is slowly but surely making progress. Vernal resident Jonathan Stearmer enjoys a variety of interests outside his career as the Uintah County Deputy Attorney. For his most recent pursuit, Stearmer is combining his experience in theater with his love of geology. Years ago, Stearmer began taking the John Wesley Powell journal with him anytime he and his family would explore areas on the Green or Colorado Rivers. In 2019, he realized the 150 year anniversary of John Powell’s famous expedition floating the Green and Colorado Rivers was approaching and he brought an idea to his county co-workers of hosting a River Fest in celebration and they ran with it. While Stearmer takes no credit for the festival’s continued success, he is now in the process of writing a musical based on the life of John Wesley Powell that could be added to the celebrations and that the County has committed support in developing. Stearmer is working to secure the rights of folk singer Alan Doyle’s music to use in the musical production. Stearmer says things are clicking and once rights are secured they would go into full script editing and polishing mode with plans for a 2024 debut as part of Outlaw Trail Theater ahead of the River Fest. This year’s JWP River Fest is coming up July 28th, 29th, and 30th.
