The Right Reverend John Waine, Bishop of Chelmsford who was a kindly but decisive pastor – obituary
The Right Reverend John Waine, who has died aged 90, was Bishop of Chelmsford from 1986-96, having previously been Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich, and before that Suffragan Bishop of Stafford. He was one of the Church of England’s most able pastors and administrators, recognised also as a “holy man”, and at one time it seemed possible that he might have become Bishop of London, but ecclesiastical politics stood in his way.
