Blue Jays reliever Joel Payamps waited on the mound as his catcher, Reese McGuire, jogged out to meet him. The two talked, then took their respective places. Blue Jays' Joel Payamps: Recalled to Toronto

Payamps was recalled by the Blue Jays on Thursday. Payamps was called up in a corresponding move to Jordan Romano (elbow) landing on the injured list. He's already thrown four innings for the Blue Jays this season, allowing no earned runs while posting a 4:1 K:BB. The team will rely on Payamps in a bullpen now missing key players such as Tyler Chatwood (triceps), Julian Merryweather (oblique) and Romano, though he isn't likely to immediately earn a high-leverage role.

Blue Jays' Joel Payamps: Returns to alt site

The Blue Jays optioned Payamps to their alternate training site Monday. Payamps' second stint with the big club of the season lasted just three days. He appeared in long relief during Friday's game against the Angels, striking out three over 2.2 scoreless frames. Payamps will head back to the alternate site to make room on the 26-man roster for Robbie Ray (elbow), who was activated from the 10-day injured list ahead of his scheduled start Monday against the Yankees.

He was originally claimed off waivers by the Red Sox from the Diamondbacks in November, then claimed by the Blue Jays from the Red Sox in February, then claimed back by the Red Sox from the Blue Jays a couple weeks later. Now, Toronto is getting its revenge. They claimed Payamps off waivers once again on Saturday.

Franchy Cordero placed on COVID list, Joel Payamps claimed (again) off waivers

The Red Sox had their first full squad workouts on Monday after pitchers and catchers had reported late last week. One player who was missing, however, was the recently acquired Franchy Cordero who had come over from the Royals in the Andrew Benintendi deal. Now we know why he is not there, as the team has placed the outfielder on the COVID-19 related list.
