Heavyweight Champ Joe Louis "Feeds" K-State Basketball Success

I recently added the book "Championship Basketball with Jack Gardner" to my K-State collection. For those that don’t know, Jack Gardner is the Bill Snyder of K-State Basketball. Prior to Gardner, there had only been a couple brief wisps of success in basketball interspersed between sustained losing. He coached three seasons with modest results prior to joining the armed forces in World War II. Mike Ahearn believed in him enough to hold his job and appoint interim coaches hoping Jack would return after the war. Not only would Gardner return, he would launch an over 40 year run of basketball greatness that today ranks K-State as a top 25 all-time basketball program.

Detroit's Joe Louis fist inspired GM's 'homicidal' Sierra truck

Those big ass GMC Sierra HD trucks are getting guff online this week as the type of vehicle that could easily kill a kid. Joe Louis – Round 3

Don’t be alarmed by the title. Joe Louis’ storyline isn’t expected to last 15 rounds. This is probably my final musing on the great boxer, but I wasn’t quite finished with, “You can run but you can’t hide.” I also found a few other quotes he reportedly made which pack some potent punches. One I especially like is, “Everyone has a plan until they’ve been hit.”

Brockton honors Rocky Marciano's legacy with showing of historical Joe Louis fight

BROCKTON — Hanging onto every jab, an audience of Brockton residents and boxing fans from near and far gathered to watch a fight of which they already knew the outcome. Despite the foregone conclusion, in the eighth round of the famous heavyweight bout between Brockton boxing legend Rocky Marciano and multi-time world champion Joe Louis, the audience watching 70 years later in the middle of a school auditorium mirrored the excitement of the live audience on October 26, 1951, at Madison Square Garden, exclaiming loudly at the right hook from their own that took down Louis.

Rocky Marciano beating Joe Louis a true case of passing the torch

In boxing, it is often said that to be The Man you have to beat The Man, but that is not always the case. In some instances, it is demonstrably false. For purposes of tracking the true lineage of the heavyweight championship of the world, early 20th century ruler Jack Johnson stands as an example of someone who unquestionably was The Man; his loss to Jess Willard under a hot Cuban sun, still the source of much speculation, did not fully legitimize Willard, at least not on the level of the fighter he had just supplanted. But the snarling beast who dethroned Willard, Jack Dempsey, soon revealed himself to be The Man as much as had that other Jack.

Boxing great Joe Louis once called Addisleigh home

In 1928 developer and builder Gerald C. English started to build a 11-room, 3-bath English Tudor house on a 94-by-126-foot lot at 175-12 Murdock Ave. in Addisleigh Park. It was completed in 1929. Mr. English, of the famous Rodman-English Building Corp., was responsible for building over 1,700 English Tudor homes in Hollis, St. Albans, Rego Park and Auburndale. He lived directly across the street from his masterpiece.
