Will Rutgers change defensive scheme with Joe Harasymiak?

With Robb Smith having left as defensive coordinator to take the same position at Duke, Head Coach Greg Schiano and the Rutgers Football program announced Joe Harasymiak as his replacement on Friday. Harasymiak was most recently co-defensive coordinator at Minnesota after achieving success as the youngest coach in Division I Football when he took Maine to the FCS Semifinals in 2018. So the question becomes, does Rutgers change their defensive scheme with a new defensive signal caller on board?

Rutgers hires former UMaine head football coach Joe Harasymiak as new defensive coordinator

Greg Schiano has snagged a New Jersey guy from a conference rival to be Rutgers’ new defensive coordinator. Minnesota co-defensive coordinator Joe Harasymiak, a 35-year-old Waldwick native, will replace Robb Smith, a person with knowledge of the situation told NJ Advance Media. Harasymiak was on staff with the Golden Gophers for the last three seasons; prior to that he was the head coach at Maine, where he led the Black Bears to an appearance in the FCS playoff semifinals in 2018.

Gophers lose safeties coach Joe Harasymiak to promotion at Rutgers

Gophers safeties coach Joe Harasymiak has left Minnesota to become the next defensive coordinator at Rutgers. Harasymiak, from Waldwick, N.J., has been with the Gophers since December 2018 after serving as head coach at FCS-level Maine from 2016-18. At Rutgers, Harasymiak will replace Robb Smith after two seasons in Piscataway, N.J.; Smith was DC at Minnesota before he was fired midway through 2018 season.
