Live Thursday the 23rd at 3pm: Jim Lauderdale

We are blessed to have so many extremely talented musicians from our area, aren’t we? One of them is “Mr. Americana” himself, Jim Lauderdale. Born in Troutman, NC and raised in Due West, SC, Jim still visits the area regularly, and we look forward to welcoming him back to his home radio station on Thursday for a visit with Roland. There’s always so much to talk about – his new album “Hope” covers everything from Covid frontline workers, to memories of Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter, to Tai Chi and mushrooms. “He’s my favorite part of Americana music!” (Ketch Secor, Old Crow Medicine Show)

2021 Holiday Hootenanny with Randall Bramblett, Jim Lauderdale

The 10th Annual Holiday Hootenanny is poised to be a musically emotional experience for all who can make it. Two musicians very near and dear to our collective heart passed away this summer within about a month of each other, percussionist Count M'Butu and keyboardist Ike Stubblefield. Their passing was a collective blow to our music community, and the 2021 edition will celebrate their energy, both musical and personal, that so many of us felt, as well as the ever present spirits of Col. Bruce Hampton, Johnny Knapp, and Yonrico Scott.

Christone ‘Kingfish’ Ingram Heats Things Up, Jim Lauderdale Keeps It Cool

As a light crowd milled about Cannery Row on Friday evening, John R. Miller and his band got tuned up at Mercy Lounge. The group — excellent all around but with fiddler Chloe Edmonstone and guitarist Adam Meisterhans deserving special shout-outs — backed Miller with his guitar on a crop of what country phenom Tyler Childers described to Scene contributor Brittney McKenna as “grown-man songs.” Miller, a West Virginian now living in Nashville, explained to McKenna ahead of his recent album Depreciated that a career spent traveling has inspired much of his work.

Songwriter's Songwriter Jim Lauderdale On New Album 'Hope,' Missing Robert Hunter & Why There's No Shortage Of Great Music Today

Even if you never get to Jim Lauderdale's thirty-somethingth album, he hopes you at least look at the cover. It's a serene, gently surreal painting by Maureen Hunter, the widow of Grateful Dead co-lyricist Robert Hunter. To him, even if record shoppers merely see that—with the word "Hope" in block letters above that—at least he'll have made a momentary impression on their hearts.

35 Years and 34 Albums Later, Jim Lauderdale Is Still Learning

There are laconic, colorful tale-spinners who just happen to have been born with the gift of gab, who can almost effortlessly entertain an audience of any size. And then there’s alt-country tunesmith Jim Lauderdale, a genial Garrison Keillor-meets-Grandpa Simpson raconteur with a surreal stream-of-consciousness style all his own. And his stories, after 35 oddly unsung years in the music business, will start deceptively simple, then zig-zag wherever they may, and yet hold your riveted interest the entire time. So when he phones to discuss Hope, his aptly optimistic new outing for YepRoc, you have to be prepared for the conversation to go just about anywhere.

On The String: Jim Lauderdale Finds Cause For Hope

The best song - okay my favorite song - on Jim Lauderdale’s new album Hope comes at the very end. Talk about showing restraint. I mean, the album is colorful, tuneful, meaningful and enriching throughout. But just when you think it’s winding down, we hit track 13, which bursts forth with a propulsive, insistent two-chord acceleration and a soaring harmony line, as Jim and guest vocalists Lille Mae and Frank Rische sing the hallelujah title: “Joyful Noise.” It’s a good encapsulation of Jim’s spirit. His music almost always smiles.

Jim Lauderdale Offers Message for Life after COVID on ‘Hope’

With his latest album, Hope, Jim Lauderdale releases another set of well-crafted songs, integrating rock, country, and folk templates. Inspired in large part by the global suffering he witnessed during the COVID epoch, Lauderdale addresses universal themes, including the resilience of the human spirit. Additionally, he speaks into the need for “intentional living,” how everyday dialogues and actions, more so than major decisions or mega-contributions, determine the quality of one’s life and legacy.

Jim Lauderdale Makes Joyful Noise On Hope

Jim Lauderdale was hard at work on an album of traditionally minded country songs when the pandemic brought his progress to a halt in early 2020. For years, he’d been Americana’s resident busy bee — the prolific poster child for a community of roots musicians whose songs orbited the worlds of folk, bluegrass, blues, and country. He wrote profusely and recorded voraciously, often releasing multiple albums a year. It simply wasn’t in his nature to stand still.
