Who did Bernstein call when Jessye Norman cancelled West Side Story?

Jay Nordlinger has a new interview with the everlasting Marilyn Horne:. Bernstein recorded his musical in 1984, with classical singers — and it’s Horne who sings “Somewhere” on this album. Jessye Norman was scheduled to sing it, but she had to withdraw, and Bernstein asked Horne to come in and do it. She was preparing to fly off to Berlin, but she said yes. She did it, in two takes, and flew off. It was New Year’s Eve.

She performed in concert venues across the world. She won five Grammy Awards including the coveted Lifetime Achievement Award. She earned the Kennedy Center Honor in 1997 and the National Medal of Arts in 2009. And now, Jessye Norman's name will be viewed by thousands as they take exit 199 from I-20 to Washington Road year-round with the naming of the Jessye Norman Memorial Interchange on Saturday.

One of Augusta's most iconic voices will now be the name millions of people see upon their arrival to the city's busiest road. The Jessye Norman Memorial Interchange, which will be located at I-20 and Washington Road, will be dedicated Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Jessye Norman School of the Arts in the Ann and Ellis Gallery.
