It wasn’t the fight that Jermall Charlo, nor his fans for that matter, wanted but the current WBC middleweight titlist has his next opponent. The truculent knockout artist will attempt to dazzle his hometown Houston crowd on June 18th, when he takes on fringe contender Maciej Sulecki. Initially, Charlo had been hoping to lure current pound-for-pound star Canelo Alvarez into the ring. However, once the Mexican native revealed that he would instead challenge WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol, followed by a third showdown against hated rival Gennadiy Golovkin, Charlo looked elsewhere.

Jermall Charlo has been chasing a mega-fight against Canelo Alvarez for years. He'll have to keep waiting. There had been hope that Charlo, who grew up in Alief and still lives in the Houston area, would be next on Canelo's docket, but on Friday, the Mexican super middleweight champion announced he has signed to fight Dmitry Bivol on May 7. Canelo has signed a two-fight deal, with the second fight expected to cap the trilogy against Gennadiy Golovkin on Sept. 17.

Jermall Charlo Released From Prison, Due For First Court Appearance March 28 On Felony Assault Charge

Jermall Charlo has a battle ahead that is far more important than any super fight previously within reach. The unbeaten two-division and reigning WBC middleweight titlist was released from Fort Bend County Jail on Monday, following a modification of the bail bond conditions. Charlo was arrested and booked on February 11 with one count of third-degree felony assault, for which remained in detention over the weekend. A first court date has been set for the case, which stems from an incident which allegedly took place last September 5, over the Labor Day weekend in Fort Bend County according to a copy of police records obtained by BoxingScene.com.
