On Friday, Jennifer Hudson released "Here I Am (Singing My Way Home)," a new original song co-written with Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee Carole King and songwriter Jamie Hartman. The single not only marks the first collaboration between the GRAMMY winners but also serves as the sole original song on the soundtrack for the upcoming Aretha Franklin biopic Respect.

Jennifer Hudson Talks Portraying Aretha Franklin in 'Respect' Featurette

Jennifer Hudson discusses her upcoming role as Aretha Franklin in a new behind-the-scenes featurette for Respect, the upcoming MGM biopic on Franklin’s life. Through interview segments and clips from the movie, as well as rehearsal videos, the featurette documents Hudson’s journey to embodying the Queen of Soul, beginning from when Franklin herself first chose the actress to portray her on film. In addition to performing Franklin’s songs live on camera, Hudson learned how to play piano and took choreography lessons to try to replicate Franklin’s stride and physicality.

Jennifer Hudson will portray the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, in the singer’s upcoming biopic, which is slated to hit theaters on Aug 13, 2021. Hudson released her new song from the soundtrack Friday, June 18, called “Here I Am (Singing My Way Home),” which is the only new original recording for the film and soundtrack. Hudson made the announcement about the unveiling of the track on Instagram.
