Erika Cruz Upsets Jelena Mrdjenovich By Technical Decision, Wins WBA Featherweight Title

Erika Cruz realized her dream Thursday night in West Point, New York. The unknown Mexican featherweight came to the United States Military Academy and upset Jelena Mrdjenovich to win the WBA women’s featherweight title. Cruz won a technical decision because their fight was stopped 25 seconds into the seventh round due to a cut over Mrdjenovich’s right eye.

Jelena Mrdjenovich had an exciting fight in December against Paola Torres in what was thought to lead up to a mega-fight with Amanda Serrano. Things fell through and both sides have their own version of what happened. In the end, Mrdjenovich was named WBC Champion Emeritus, and Serrano was elevated to full champion.
