Jehnny Beth on mental health and the music industry: “I know a lot of musicians who struggle to be heard and respected”

Jehnny Beth has written about ongoing mental health issues in the music industry and her hopes for younger artists to resist “age-old patriarchal abuse”. The Savages frontwoman and soloist, who last week released a collaborative album with Primal Scream‘s Bobby Gillespie, posted a video of herself holding a burning stick as a symbol of shining “a light” on the state of the industry.

Album reviews: Tyler, the Creator, Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real, Bobby Gillespie and Jehnny Beth

"Call Me If You Get Lost" Tyler, the Creator’ sixth album — the follow-up to 2019′s Grammy-winning "Igor" — is a beautiful mess: a free-flowing rumination that jumps abruptly from one style to the next, by turns braggadocious and anxiety-ridden, celebratory and introspective. Its packed-with-ideas songs last only as long as they need to, whether two minutes or 10.

Bobby Gillespie and Jehnny Beth – Utopian Ashes

Homes. Luxury British saloon cars from the 1970s. A waltz. There are a few things for which being described as stately is expected. The music of Savages or Primal Scream probably do not number amongst the most obvious examples. Yet here we are, with Utopian Ashes, a collaboration between the lead singer of the former and the lead singer of the later that could very much be labelled as stately. If past performance is the best guide to future behaviour, at first the most surprising aspect of the album is the lack of urgency.
