Draft Review: Jason Witten, a 1-year wonder in college, no 1-year wonder in NFL

EDITOR’S NOTE: Rick Gosselin spent 20 years as the NFL columnist for the Dallas Morning News, including 20 offseasons studying and researching prospects for the NFL draft. He didn’t watch any tape – he was a writer, not a scout – but he talked to the men who did watch tape. He built a network of NFL general managers, head coaches, personnel directors, scouts and assistant coaches from all 32 teams who would share with him their analyses of players. Gosselin used their insights to build his own draft board, Top 100 board and mock drafts. For 10 consecutive years he had the best Top 100 board in the country (2001-10), according to the Huddle Report, and three times he produced the best mock draft. This NFL offseason he’ll dig into his scouting reports and discover what NFL talent evaluators were saying about players coming out of college. Next up is recently retired tight end Jason Witten, who spent 16 of his 17 NFL seasons with the Dallas Cowboys. Here are some of the comments on Witten from 14 talent evaluators leading up to his 2003 NFL draft:

Letters to the Editor — Three cheers for Jason Witten, the Allen Fire Department, the executive order to increase food aid

1 Jason Witten — Re: “He really is going home — Witten to coach at Liberty Christian where his kids attend,” by David Moore, Tuesday SportsDay column. Jason Witten is, and always has been, the epitome of what a professional athlete should be: a “class act,” a model citizen and, perhaps the best of all, a true role model to young athletes who aspire to make a career of professional sports. Retiring as a Dallas Cowboy is the way it should be even though it is with only a one-day contract to make it legal.

Jason Witten returning to Dallas to coach - high school

The first time former Dallas Cowboys tight end and future Hall of Fame honoree Jason Witten retired from football, he went into a lucrative, high-visibility job as part of the Monday Night Football broadcast team. That rather infamously did not go so well. He came out of retirement, spent a year back with the Cowboys, signed for a very desultory season with the Las Vegas Raiders, and then retired again. This time he is opting to go into the coaching ranks. But rather than trying to vault right to the top of things, like he did with his broadcasting venture, he is starting on a much lower rung by taking the head coaching job at his children’s school, Liberty Christian High School in Argyle, a suburb of Dallas.
