Attorney General Jason Miyares Announces $4.25 Billion National Settlement With Opioids Maker Teva

RICHMOND, VA (VR) – Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares has reached an agreement in principle on key financial terms with opioid maker Teva, which would provide up to $4.25 billion to participating states and local governments. Virginia’s share of the overall settlement is estimated to be over $70 million, plus the option to accept Naloxone or additional money in lieu of the Naloxone from Teva. The $70 million will be split amongst the Commonwealth and Virginia’s localities that join a final settlement, and the majority is expected to go to the Opioid Abatement Fund that is administered by the Opioid...

Attorney General Jason Miyares Announces $8 Million Data Breach Settlement with Wawa

RICHMOND, VA (VR) — Attorney General Jason Miyares announced that he, along with six other attorneys general, has reached an $8 million settlement with Wawa, Inc., to resolve a 2019 data breach that compromised approximately 34 million payment cards used at Wawa stores. This is the third-largest credit card data breach settlement reached by state attorneys general, behind Target and The Home Depot. The Commonwealth’s share of the settlement is $682,432.14. The Wawa data breach occurred after hackers gained access to the company’s computer network in late 2018 through a phishing attack, and later deployed malware on Wawa’s point-of-sale terminals. Richmond, VA (VR) – Attorney General Jason Miyares has joined a multistate settlement involving the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and seventeen other state attorneys general that recovers $34.2 million for more than 46,000 servicemembers and veterans who were deceived and defrauded by national jewelry retailer, Harris Jewelry. The jewelry company used deceptive marketing tactics to lure active duty servicemembers to their financing program, falsely claiming that investing in this program would improve servicemembers’ credit scores. Instead, servicemembers were tricked into obtaining high-interest loans on overpriced, poor-quality jewelry that saddled them with thousands of dollars of debt and worsened their credit....
