Mariners' Jarred Kelenic: Struggling early at Tacoma

Kelenic, who was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma on Friday, is 1-for-9 with six strikeouts over his first two games with the Rainiers. It's naturally a very small sample, but it's undoubtedly worrisome that Kelenic is already struggling with making consistent contact at a level below the minors. The 22-year-old has dominated at the Triple-A level in the past, however, and given his pedigree, he should be able to boost his numbers up over time while endeavoring to eventually get back to the big leagues.

THE CHEAP SEATS with STEVE CAMERON: Jarred Kelenic needs to relax

Well, if you’re Jarred Kelenic, waiting all afternoon to see if the Class AAA Rainiers are ever going to start their game against Reno ... Specifically, why not watch Julio Rodriguez — who may have a little more natural talent, but not THAT much — get four hits, reach base five times and unload a 423-foot home run to help Seattle hang an 8-7 loss on the Mets?

Mariners demote Jarred Kelenic hours before first Mets matchup

The hyped prospect in the middle of the much-discussed Mets-Mariners trade will not be playing in Citi Field on Friday night. The Mariners demoted outfielder Jarred Kelenic on Friday afternoon, hours before the struggling prospect was expected to be in the lineup against the team that drafted him. Kelenic was the centerpiece that went to Seattle in Dec. 2018 when the Mets got back Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz in a move that has been lampooned pretty much since the day it was made. Kelenic was — and is still — expected to be a lynchpin of the Mariners future, but he is off to a miserable start. The 22-year-old is hitting .140 this season in 86 at-bats with three home runs.

Mariners option former No. 6 overall pick Jarred Kelenic

The Mariners announced this afternoon they’ve claimed right-hander Adrian Sampson off waivers from the Cubs. They’ve also selected outfielder Steven Souza Jr. to the big leagues in place of Jarred Kelenic, who was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma. Seattle also reinstated Sergio Romo from the 10-day injured list, optioned Danny Young and designated Stuart Fairchild and Yohan Ramirez for assignment to clear 40-man roster space for Sampson and Souza.
