Netflix isn’t having a really great 2022, so far. The company has been hampered by slow growth and a stock valuation that greatly declined. And because of this, folks in Hollywood are wondering what’s going to happen next? Will Netflix continue to champion auteur-driven cinema as it has in the past or will it focus solely on four-quadrant blockbusters and comedies? We’re not sure, yet, and Jane Campion is worried about that prospect also.

One Good Thing: The Jane Campion film that captures spring euphoria

Spring is glorious and terrible, especially in the Northeast United States. The first signs of flowers and greenery are so gorgeous and well-deserved after winter that a simple walk outside can feel positively giddy. There’s that vertiginous falling-in-love feeling that happens when the first actual not-cold breeze hits your skin. Then, just as you’ve taken a selfie with your spectacular neighborhood cherry blossoms, the petals flutter to the ground, and it’s over. Here in New York, the sidewalks heat up and reanimate the winter’s dormant dog pee, the city smells like garbage, and we have to wait a whole year to feel the ecstasy again.

When Jane Campion returned with 2021’s Oscar-nominated “The Power Of The Dog,” there was much talk about the New Zealand filmmaker’s return and her 12-year absence from feature filmmaking. However, often missing in that narrative was the fact that Campion never went anywhere. All she did was pivot to television and two seasons of “Top Of The Lake” (2013 and then 2017), so acclaimed and anticipated at the time, it was invited to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and is largely regarded as some of the best TV of the decade. Of course, the star of both those seasons was Elisabeth Moss.

Before Will Smith slapped Chris Rock, the biggest feud of awards season was between Sam Elliott and the Oscar-nominated film The Power Of The Dog.
